Egg Bearer and Tips will be on exhibition at the Kent State University (Stark Campus) Fine Arts Gallery located at 6000 Frank Rd., North Canton, OH from March 5th - 30th. The show, Families and Feminisms, is part of KSU's Women's Month Celebration. Juror for this show was Donna Webb, Professor Emeritus at The University of Akron's Myers School of Art. Artists Reception is Wednesday, March 21st , 3-5:00 pm.    Thresholds will be on view through June 24th at Group Ten Gallery's new location at 201 E. Erie St. in Kent, Ohio (across from the Kent Hotel) Gallery hours are Mon. - Fri. 9-5:00 and Sat. 12-5:00.

Group Ten has recently relocated to a great new location at 201 E. Erie St. in Kent Ohio in the vibrant downtown shopping and dining district. The Current Show, "The 4th Annual Members and Friends Show" is up through April 1st. I am pleased to have two sculpture pieces included in this very strong show. Fifty-six of 383 entries from 40 states and 5 countries were juried into the 32nd NCS Annual Juried Show this Fall by three well respected jurors. Each year the NCS holds their juried show in a different U.S. location. This year the show was held in nearby Kent, Ohio and hosted by the art Department of Kent State University. KSU is my undergrad Alma Mater so of course I had to try my luck and enter the show. Lucky me ... my piece, "Distaff Operations" made the cut. I was thrilled!  "Smiling" with my collage, "Distaff Operations" at the opening reception at the KSU School of Art Downtown Gallery.  I spent this spring/summer in my sculpture studio fabricating 4 colorful steel "jazzy jungle" sculptures for the lobby of an office building in Beachwood, OH. Making steel sculpture, for me, is always a combination of fun, excitement, stress, problem solving, physically hard work and personal reward. The images below document some of the steps along the journey to completion of this large project.  Possibilities for "jungle fronds" cut out of cardboard and posterboard.  Grinding, filing and sanding the edges of individual pieces after they have been cut from sheet steel.  The main pieces for the first two sections ready for shaping.  Pieces bent into shape ready to be welded to a steel plate.  Pieces are welded to steel plate. Shaped steel rods serve to stabilize the piece and enhance the composition.  After a thorough scrubbing, each section is primed.  Pieces are taped off and painted in the colors requested by the client.  Section 1 attached to base and installed in lobby. Two sections installed on left wall.  Installation complete. Creating steel sculpture is not a one person job. Extra hands are needed to handle tasks along the way. I owe a debt of gratitude to my stepson, David and to Dave a neighbor who helped when I needed an extra strong arm, to Lou, another neighbor who allowed me to store completed sculpture sections in his garage, to John Sprenkle who produced the photos of my sculpture in the lobby and especially to my husband, Fritz for his assistance in the shop, his technical knowledge, and with the secure installation of the wood bases. It's always renewing to attend events with like minded folks who are passionate about what they do. My recent trip to Pittsburgh to attend the International Sculpture Center's 26th Annual Conference was just such an event. Visits to the Carnegie and Warhol Museums, the Mattress Factory, the Carrie Furnaces, Carnegie Mellon University, along with the professional panel presentations and discussions at the August Wilson Center and the littleSCULPTURE exhibition and much more, were inspirational and informative ... I'm ready to make more art! |
